Time and time again, owners of Singapore-registered cars have been caught fuelling their vehicles with RON95 petrol, which is heavily subsidised by the government and reserved for Malaysians only.
Despite the stiff penalties that await those breaking the law, some drivers still proceed to try their luck to see whether they can get away with it.
SG-registered MPV seen pumping RON95 petrol
In a photo shared on the Facebook page SGRV FRONT MAN yesterday (Aug 25), it showed a young man fuelling his Honda Spada with RON95 at a petrol station in Johor Jaya.
Instead of trying to be inconspicuous while doing something that was clearly unlawful, the man is seen propping a leg up onto the platform where the fuel pump was placed, along with a smug look on his face, as though it was the most natural thing to do.

It’s not known whether a member of the public or petrol station staff stopped the man from what he was doing or reported the incident to the authorities.
Angry reactions
Needless to say, the photo sparked a flurry of heated reactions from Malaysians, who were annoyed and outraged by foreigners using RON95 with impunity.
Some called upon the authorities to take harsh action against the man such as confiscating the car or subjecting him to jail time or caning.

Others pinned the blame on the petrol station for not stopping the man from pumping RON95, with one saying that it “takes two hands to clap.”

Meanwhile, a netizen speculated that the man was most likely a Malaysian who held permanent residence (PR) status in Singapore, leading him to think that he could enjoy benefits from both countries simultaneously.

RON95 has long been a thorny subject between Malaysians and Singaporeans, which has led to fiery debates online:
