Over 1,000 Graduates Celebrated at McDonald’s Vocational Academy’s 5th Convocation Ceremony

Where jobs become careers
If you thought working at McDonald’s was just about flipping burgers, think again.

On June 30, 2025, McDonald’s Malaysia celebrated a major milestone by honouring over 1,000 apprentices who successfully completed its Vocational Apprenticeship Program at a convocation ceremony held at IDCC Shah Alam.

The event marked a proud moment not only for the graduates but also showcased the company’s commitment to empowering Malaysian youth through skills-based education.

Gracing the ceremony was YB Datuk Hajah Rubiah Wang, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, who officiated the event on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Her presence reaffirmed the government’s continued backing of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and the role of industry players like McDonald’s Malaysia in making that vision a reality.

So, what’s the program all about?

McDonald’s Malaysia’s Vocational Apprenticeship Program isn’t just for  part-timers. It’s a structured training path launched in collaboration with the Department of Skills Development (JPK) under the Ministry of Human Resources.

Here’s what sets it apart:

1. Dual training model

The program is designed based on the National Dual Training System (SLDN), which combines both practical and classroom-based learning.

2. 70% practical, 30% theory

Apprentices spend most of their time gaining hands-on experience at McDonald’s outlets (70 percent), while also attending theory classes (30 percent).

3. Nationally recognised certifications

Graduates receive the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) or Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM), both of which are recognised by the Ministry of Education and are relevant to the food and beverage industry.

4. Strong career pathway

More than 5,000 youths have completed the program so far, and 80 percent of them have stayed on to pursue long-term careers with McDonald’s Malaysia.

But what really stood out were the stories

Behind every certificate handed out was a journey worth celebrating. During the ceremony, three graduates took centre stage with deeply moving stories of grit and personal growth.

Raidi Hamizan Rozki, named Overall Best Apprentice, shared how he faced doubts early on but stayed the course.

Some people said, ‘Why work at McDonald’s? Is there even a future there?’ especially during the boycott period

But I chose to stay focused and prove that this path can lead to something meaningful. Today, I’m proud to stand here with this achievement

He also shared his dream of paying it forward.

“I’d like to thank Cikgu Haikal especially. He’s taught me so much, and I hope to be like him and share my knowledge with others.”

Another graduate, Muhammad Hfiy Haikal Ruslan, brought the crowd to silence with his recovery story.

I was on my way to the mosque when the accident happened. I was in a coma for a month and spent about three months in the hospital

It was a difficult time, but once I recovered, I continued with the program. Now I’m a Crew Leader and grateful I didn’t give up

Then there was Nur Farrah Adibah Razali, 21, who has autism and faces learning challenges, opened up about  the hardships she went through and the people who helped her grow along the way.

I was nervous in the beginning, especially when working on the SLDN portfolio

But my colleagues were patient and guided me every step of the way. Even when I made mistakes, they didn’t give up on me

Despite criticism from some who didn’t see the value in the program, she stayed true to her goals.

Some people said joining this program wasn’t important, but I believe in learning and building a future. I plan to continue working and helping my parents as much as I can.”

McDonald’s Malaysia backs its apprentices in a big way

One of the biggest takeaways from the event was just how much McDonald’s Malaysia invests in its apprentices.

Every participant gets full sponsorship throughout the program, including:

  • SOCSO protection and EPF contributions
  • Monthly allowances
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Insurance and medical benefits

In fact, McDonald’s Malaysia invests about RM40,000 per apprentice, and there’s no service bond; graduates are free to chart their own paths after completing the program.

Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia, summed it up well:

McDonald’s Malaysia is not just a place of employment. It is an institution that promotes lifelong learning, career development, and socio-economic progress. We are proud to have helped over 5,000 youths realise their potential, and we look forward to shaping even more future leaders.”
