‘No Pens Or Mugs’ — M’sian Teacher Demands ‘Beneficial’ Gifts Be Given On Teacher’s Day

Oddly specific.
Today (May 16) is remembered all across the world as Teacher’s Day, where we express gratitude for the love, sweat, and tears our teachers have invested in shaping us into the people we are today.

As such, most students would rack their brains over what presents to gift their teachers. But one teacher has recently gone viral for being too specific with the kind of gifts that should be given.

‘Don’t give pens, mugs, photo frames, or flowers’

In a Threads post shared by a parent, she posted a screenshot of a message sent by a teacher of a private school in Johor.

In the text, the teacher reminded parents to prepare gifts for their children to bring to school and gift it to their teachers.

The teacher then laid out in great detail what kind of gifts should be avoided at all costs:

We humbly request that parents DO NOT give pens, mugs, photo frames, or flowers to teachers. The only presents acceptable are those that are beneficial,” the message read.

Needless to say, the message didn’t sit well with the OP, who questioned whether teachers could make such demands.

Netizens outraged

In the comment section, netizens were also repulsed by the teacher’s sense of entitlement and expressed their displeasure.

‘Sorry this isn’t acceptable…asking for gifts and there’s a rule of what the gift shouldn’t be. It’s a bit rude to say the least. Whoever wants to give gifts, let them based on their level of capability. Please file an official complaint.’

‘If I received this message, I’d ask my child to slap the teacher on my behalf.’

‘The last sentence’s a bit of a red flag. Not all students come from wealthy families. How will less better-off parents feel when they read this? At the same time, they don’t want their kids to feel they’ve been neglected by teacher just because they gave a pen set.’
