No Fireworks After 12am, Only ‘Pop-Pop’ & ‘Happy Boom’ Allowed, Say Police

Police said it applies to all celebrations, not just Chinese New Year.
Kuala Lumpur residents planning to light up the sky for festive celebrations have been reminded to keep the noise down after midnight.

Police have warned that playing with firecrackers or fireworks past 12am, especially if it disturbs others, could result in immediate action.

Reported by Buletin TV3, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the public should avoid setting off firecrackers late at night as it may disrupt public order.

He stressed that the reminder does not apply only to Chinese New Year, but to all celebrations throughout the year.

There will be no favouritism towards anyone who violates the regulations and immediate action will be taken. This involves public order issues which are currently a priority,” he said.

Fadil made the statement during a press conference after attending the Sentul District Police Chief handover ceremony at the Sentul District Police Headquarters.

Only 2 types of fireworks permitted

According to police, only two types of fireworks are allowed to be sold and played during Chinese New Year, namely ‘Pop-Pop’ and ‘Happy Boom’.

Fadil explained that permission was granted for these two types because they do not contain explosive materials that could endanger public safety.

However, their sale is still subject to permits issued by the relevant District Police Headquarters, based on specific guidelines.

Permit required for sales

Fadil added that the sale of firecrackers and fireworks in Kuala Lumpur must go through a proper permit application process.

So far, police have received several complaints about the sale of firecrackers and fireworks without permits around the capital.

We will ensure that any sales without permits and licences will be dealt with in cooperation with the local authorities.

“This is the enforcement responsibility of all agencies led by the police. Anyone who violates the regulations, regardless of race or religion, action will be taken,” he said.

Legal action under Explosives Act

Those found possessing, selling, purchasing or playing with firecrackers and fireworks other than the permitted types may face action under Section 7 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

With festive celebrations around the corner, police are urging the public to celebrate responsibly and be mindful of others, especially when it comes to late night fireworks.
