Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has promised a thorough investigation into the recent error involving Malaysia’s national flag in the official analysis report of the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam results.
The flag illustrations, generated using artificial intelligence (AI), displayed several serious inaccuracies, including versions with two crescents and eight-striped flags—symbols that do not represent the official Jalur Gemilang.

No double standards, says PM’s office
Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, the Prime Minister’s senior press secretary, conveyed Anwar’s concerns, stating that all organisations—be it local media, international firms, or educational institutions—will be held to the same standards.
He stressed that incidents involving incorrect displays of national symbols have been occurring too frequently and must be urgently addressed.
Speaking in a video posted on his official Facebook page, the press secretary reminded the public that content involving national identity or dignity must be handled with utmost care and responsibility.
He added that government bodies, in particular, must show heightened sensitivity when it comes to representing national emblems—especially in documents affecting millions of students and parents.
While Anwar acknowledged the role of technology and AI in enhancing various sectors, including education, media, and business, he stressed that AI must never substitute human oversight,” he said.
He warned that unchecked use of AI, particularly when dealing with symbols tied to national pride, could threaten social harmony.
MOE apologises, promises action
The Ministry of Education has since issued a formal apology and pledged a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
He concluded by stating that errors involving the national flag—regardless of intent—are a serious concern.
He emphasised that respect and protection of national symbols must be upheld by all, without exception or privilege.
