‘It Was Unintentional’, Claims Nigerian Charged With Biting Off Ear Of M’sian Officer

The corporal's ear has yet to be reattached.
A Nigerian man studying in Malaysia has claimed trial to charges of causing grievous harm to a police corporal, whose left ear was partially bitten off last week.

The accused, 38-year-old Okenyehike Kelvin Obianke, made the plea when the charge was read out to him before Magistrate S. Mageswary at the KL Magistrates’ Court today.

Acted aggressively towards police officer

According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, he said the corporal, Danielrul Azraq Ahmad Khair, had responded to a distress call at Metro Prima in Kepong, where it involved Obianke causing a ruckus at a private clinic on Apr 25, reported NST.

While placing Obianke into a police vehicle after arresting him, Danielrul was attacked by the Nigerian national and had a portion of his left ear bitten off.

Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari later revealed that the severed ear couldn’t be reattached due to potential infection.

However, the attending doctor at Kuala Lumpur Hospital will be reassessing Danielrul’s condition today before deciding on whether to carry out the surgery.

Nigerian charged with biting off ear

Obianke, who was unrepresented, was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a fine if convicted.

However, he pleaded not guilty, adding, “It was unintentional”, reported FMT.

He was not given bail and the court set June 10 for case mention and document submission.

Meanwhile, Obianke was charged at a separate magistrates’ court for not possessing valid travel documents to enter Malaysia and consuming benzo (nimetazepam).

The offences were allegedly committed at 10.10am in front of the same clinic on Apr 25 and at 3pm at the Narcotics Investigations Department headquarters on Apr 26.

For the invalid travel documents offence, he was charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, punishable under Section 6(3), which provides a maximum RM10,000 fine or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, and not less than six lashes upon conviction.

The drug offence was framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, where it carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum prison term of two years upon conviction.
