An American blogger has taken to social media to praise Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, for its unexpected modernity.
High-rise buildings, upscale restaurants, and a clean, state-of-the-art subway system left him stunned, even comparing the local transit system favorably against New York City’s.
“Kuala Lumpur is incredibly modern!”
The blogger, known as “that Evan guy,” shared his thoughts in a YouTube video, where he candidly admitted that his trip to Kuala Lumpur completely upended his preconceived notions about Southeast Asia.
Kuala Lumpur is incredibly modern, far from what I expected,” he said.
“Skyscrapers are everywhere—it feels like an international metropolis.”

Evan documented his experience riding Malaysia’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) and was immediately struck by the cleanliness and well-maintained environment at the station.
“The subway stations here are stunning and so clean! They’re way better than those in New York—by a long shot,” he exclaimed.
Stark contrast with New York City’s transit
The blogger went on to highlight the stark contrast between Kuala Lumpur’s transit system and New York City’s.
According to him, subway stations in New York often struggle with severe hygiene issues, with litter, vomit, and even rats frequently spotted at stations and inside train carriages.
The unpleasant odors lingering in the air further mar the experience.
In contrast, Evan was thoroughly impressed by Malaysia’s rail system. He praised the pristine condition of the LRT carriages and noted that passengers were orderly and polite, refraining from loud or disruptive behavior.

This trip to Malaysia has been a real eye-opener. I never imagined Kuala Lumpur’s subway system could be this clean and modern,” he said.
“It’s truly unbelievable for someone coming from the U.S.”
Netizens’ reaction
The video has since gone viral, with many viewers expressing pride in Malaysia’s public transit system and modern infrastructure.
