A worrying trend has emerged online where young social media users are making jokes about violence against women, prompting anger and concern from netizens.
Recently, an OP shared a series of screenshots showing students on Threads joking that girls should accept any romantic confession if they want to avoid being attacked.
The OP described the behaviour as “disturbing” and said normalising such jokes only fuels a culture that dismisses violence against women.
Jokes suggesting women should “just accept or get stabbed”
The screenshots showed users writing comments such as:
- “If I confess, you better accept. If you do not want to, I will stab you.”
- “To those who get confessed to, you better just accept, or you might get stabbed later.”
- “Ustaz Firdaus said next time if someone confesses to you, do not reject, just accept or they might kill you.”
- “To all women, you should just accept when a man confesses, or you might get stabbed if you reject.”
The OP added that what shocked them even more was that one of the screenshots claimed a religious figure had made a similar “joke,” which they felt shows how casual messaging about violence can spread when even adults treat it lightly.
They also questioned why the conversation suddenly shifted to telling girls to stay safe by accepting unwanted confessions, instead of teaching boys and men to manage rejection without letting their ego turn into violence.
Netizens: “Kids today are seriously messed up”
Many Malaysians reacted with frustration and disbelief.
One commenter said:
“The fact that it is kids posting this is more disgusting. Something is seriously wrong if they can joke about this.”
Another user asked why the usernames were blurred:
Why cover the names? PDRM said anyone joking about this is committing harassment and it is illegal. Just report them.”
The OP replied that they blurred the names because the posters looked like minors, and confirmed that they had already reported the content to MCMC.
