Focus on protecting human rights
In a Facebook post, Chia Cheng Wee, Co-Deputy Chairperson of the National Legal Aid and YBGK Committee, stated that the legal team’s focus is on protecting the suspect’s human rights, not engaging in gossip about the case.
We are not here to gossip, but to make sure that the basic human rights of the 17-year-old suspect are not violated under the current legal framework.”

Legal assistance for the suspect
Chia also assured that the 17-year-old suspect would be brought to court today to apply for an extension of his detention.
He added that if the family has not hired another lawyer, they should not worry, as YBGK lawyers are fully prepared to offer their support.
“We have on-duty lawyers available in Malacca, ready to assist with detention extension cases.
“Even for foreign nationals who are unable to receive YBGK assistance, we will offer free services through the Legal Aid Centre,” Chia told China Press.
Family engages its own counsel
While YBGK had initially prepared to provide legal aid, Chia later updated that the suspect’s family had engaged their own lawyer to represent the teenager at the remand hearing.
“According to lawyers on duty, the family engaged their own counsel to attend to the remand proceeding.”
