For the entirety of last week, the entire nation was gripped with intense shock and sorrow over the brutal stabbing of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bandar Utama 4.
She was finally laid to rest yesterday (Oct 20) following the conclusion of the wake service which was held at Nirvana Center Kuala Lumpur (Nirvana 2), where notable political figures were in attendance.

‘Thank you for the outpouring of love & support’
In a Facebook post, Yap’s mother dedicated her heartfelt gratitude to Malaysians who stood by the family in the face of deep tragedy.
“In this time of unimaginable sorrow, our hearts are filled with both grief and gratitude.
We are truly touched and humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and presence from all of you during this painful period. Your care has been a light in our darkest days.”

She then gave a special mention to the following parties who gave them words of comfort and support:
- The Yang di-Pertua Agong (YDPA) and Her Majesty the Queen
- Tan Sri, Puan Sri, Dato’ and Datin
- Members of Parliament (MPs)
- Headmasters/ headmistress, school representatives, teachers & students
- Relatives
- Members of the public
Yap’s mother added that while she may have unintentionally missed out some people, she said every act of kindness “has not gone unnoticed”.
“Every gesture, big or small, will forever be remembered by our family. Your support gave us strength, your presence brought comfort, and your prayers helped us carry on. From the depths of our hearts — thank you.”

Yap’s death was a huge shock to the nation, where it left Malaysians questioning what had become of schools, which recently saw a spate of violent incidents occurring.
