On Oct 14, the whole of Malaysia was shaken to its core after 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen was brutally stabbed to death by a 14-year-old schoolmate.
Although a month has passed since her untimely demise, Yap’s mother is still struggling to come to terms with her daughter’s death and expressed her sorrow in a Facebook post.
‘A pain we will carry forever’
In the Facebook post dated Nov 7, Yap’s mother wrote that it was the 25th day since her daughter’s murder.
She added that she had been busying herself with Yap’s wake and prayer ceremonies and only recently managed to slow things down during the past few days.

When things finally quieted down, I felt like I’ve woken up from a dream. And when the dream ended, I was forced to realise that we have truly lost her forever.”
Yap’s mother then went on to detail the plans the family had in store before Yap’s life was cut short.
“We had arranged a whole series of plans for her, but none of them can ever materialise now. We originally planned to take her on a cruise after her exams and agreed to celebrate her birthday on the plane.

“We had booked tickets to fly to Guangzhou on her birthday and she was also looking forward to moving into the new house, where she personally designed her room, chose the wall colours, and bought the duvet covers and bedsheets she liked.”

Yap’s mother then ended the post by saying all of these plans have now turned into a form of regret as it was impossible to be fulfilled any longer.
“It has become a pain we will carry in our hearts forever,” she added.
Suspect charged with murder
Following Yap’s death, the 14-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder on Oct 22.
However, under Section 97 of the Child Act 2001, the suspect will not be sentenced to death even if he gets convicted of murder.
Instead, he will be sentenced to detention at the pleasure of Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA), the Ruler, or Yang di-Pertua Negeri depending on the place where the crime was committed in.

As for the length of his detention period, it is subject to yearly review for potential release by the Ruler or Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Nov 21 has been set for the submission of forensic and pathology reports.
