When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a hearty bowl of stew that warms both the belly and the heart.
Malaysia’s beloved kari ayam has officially claimed the throne – it’s now the No.1 Stew In The World, according to TasteAtlas’ Top 100 Stews list for April 2025.

Yes, it’s true – out of hundreds of rich and flavourful stews across the globe, it was our humble chicken curry that came out on top.
TasteAtlas, the renowned online food and travel guide, crowned Malaysia’s kari ayam as the best of the best, and we can’t help but beam with pride!
What makes our Kari Ayam so special?
Described by TasteAtlas as a dish popular in both Malaysia and Indonesia, kari ayam is a delicious blend of chicken pieces, onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, and coconut milk – all simmered with fragrant spices like cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, fennel, and curry leaves.
What sets it apart is its traditional preparation in a clay pot, which enhances the flavour by allowing the curry to cook in its own juices without reacting to the spices.
And just before serving? A dash of lime juice and a sprinkle of fresh coriander give it that final zing – best enjoyed with a steaming plate of rice. Simple, soulful, and oh-so-satisfying.
Who else made the list?
Following closely behind our winning stew were Thailand’s rich and creamy Phanaeng Curry, Armenia’s traditional Dzhash, India’s ever-popular Murgh Makhani, and Iran’s hearty Kalle Pache.
But none could quite top the comforting taste and layered flavours of Malaysia’s kari ayam.
This ranking is more than just bragging rights – it’s a celebration of the warmth, spice, and soul of Malaysian cuisine.
Whether it’s served at a family gathering, a bustling mamak stall, or lovingly prepared at home, kari ayam has always held a special place in our hearts.
And now? The whole world knows it too.
So the next time you dig into a bowl of kari ayam, just remember – you’re tasting a stew that’s officially number one in the world. How cool is that?
