Malaysians have been reminded to show more friendliness and less hostility to tourists as the country gears up preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026.
The reminder was given out by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who was responding to feedback received from tourists thus far, reported Malay Mail.
‘Be friendlier’
While Tiong acknowledged that promotional efforts for Visit Malaysia 2026 have yielded positive results so far, he said more could be done to make tourists feel more welcomed.
This comes after agencies informed him that some tourists had raised concerns about unfriendly behaviour, including instances of impatience and hostility.
“I urge all Malaysians to work together to show that our country is a welcoming, friendly and culturally rich destination.
“This is because hospitality plays a crucial role in shaping visitors’ perceptions of Malaysia,” he added.
Reminder on cleanliness
Tiong also addressed cleanliness and waste management issues that could negatively impact Visit Malaysia 2026’s image, saying that all parties must play a role in raising cleanliness standards and take waste management seriously.
He urged local communities to take on the mantle of maintaining public spaces so that Malaysia’s image in the eyes of tourists will not be tarnished.
While we cannot place excessive pressure on tourists, we will do our best to educate and gently remind them. Cooperation from all parties is essential.
“These efforts will also be supported through health promotion and early education initiatives among the local community, including children,” he said.
Under Visit Malaysia 2026, the country is looking to attract a total of 43 million international visitor arrivals, according to The Edge.
