In the wake of the recent gas pipeline explosion, netizens have taken to social media to raise awareness about how the public can identify areas near natural gas transmission pipelines.
According to a Xiaohongshu user known as “馨馨霓懿,” the explosion was not caused by a petrol station as some had initially assumed, but rather originated from a natural gas transmission pipeline.
Spot the waning signs
She urged the public to be more vigilant about their surroundings, highlighting that the presence of PETRONAS’ small yellow signboards indicates proximity to these pipelines.
Usually, wherever there’s a PETRONAS station, you can spot these yellow warning signs nearby,” she wrote. She also shared a Google Street View screenshot showing such a sign a few kilometers from her home.
She went on to advise those planning to purchase property to avoid areas near natural gas pipelines, if possible.

The post sparked widespread discussion among netizens. Some users clarified that not all gas pipelines are located near petrol stations.
In fact, natural gas pipelines are categorized into high-pressure and low-pressure systems — with high-pressure pipelines managed by PETRONAS, and low-pressure ones handled by Gas Malaysia.

Netizens’ concerns
Others raised concerns about the size and visibility of the yellow warning signs, saying they are often too small and easily overlooked.
Some even questioned what would happen if their homes were originally built outside pipeline zones, but were later included within the affected radius due to newly installed pipelines.
