Drinking or eating inside the MRT is strictly prohibited for sanitary reasons as it can lead to spills and an unwanted mess.
For a pair of Maaysians however, they never expected that a simple gesture of holding their drinks while inside the MRT would lead to a heated exchange.
Yelled at for holding drink inside MRT
In an exclusive interview with WeirdKaya, a reader named Damian shared about the unpleasant encounter that occurred on December 1 while taking a ride between the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) and Titiwangsa MRT stations.
According to Damian, he and his friend Rita were chatting with each other when a man approached them and told them not to consume their inside the MRT.
“Although we told him that the drinks were unopened, the man kept on insisting that we were breaking the rules.
“Suddenly, another man, who was much older, came up to us and sternly said that drinks should not be consumed on the MRT, despite the fact that we wern’t drinking it.
He accused us of drinking inside the MRT, which we didn’t. We were just holding it.”
Damian added then when he tried defending himself and Rita, the man reportedly became agitated and shouted at them for talking on the MRT.
Things then took a dramatic turn when the man began using racial slurs and issuing threats, which were specifically aimed at Rita.
“He threatened her by saying if she spoke another word, he would not hesitate to harm her.
“Despite the tension, I began recording the incident, prompting the man to hurl even more racial slurs,” he recounted.
While the conflict thankfully didn’t escalate to a physical confrontation, Damian said that the incident has affected him profoundly.
I wish people could be more kinder to others and address things nicely instead of using slurs and causing a scene.
“I hope that by sharing my experience, other people will not have to endure the same distress and that greater awareness will encourage Malaysians to foster respect and empathy for one another, regardless of their differences.”
