As much as we hate to admit it, Malaysians are especially notorious when it comes to public littering, where tons of rubbish are often left dumped behind on the streets or public transportation.
In light of this reoccurring problem, the government is looking to punish those with a penchant for public littering by making them clean public toilets and drains.

Community service for M’sians caught littering in public
As reported by Berita Harian, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the move was part of proposed amendments to a section that deals with public littering under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171).
He added that the amendments were made to make sure that litterbugs will not commit the same offense again.
These individuals have previously been fined, but they are still not deterred despite being compounded. So we will invite repeat offenders to join in with a special T-shirt and have them help clean drains and the streets,” he said.
Nga added that similar initiatives have been implemented in other countries like Norway, Sweden, and Singapore with great success.

“The amendments will be presented in Parliament once it’s approved by the Cabinet next year.
“In this social media era, if we do not maintain cleanliness, foreigners will share their experiences online, which could tarnish the country’s reputation,” he said.
