A Malay woman married to a Chinese husband recently sparked widespread interest and discussion online, after sharing her experiences joining her husband’s family during the Qingming Festival.
In a video shared on TikTok, Ain documented her visit to Nirvana Memorial Park in Kuala Lumpur, where she accompanied her husband, father-in-law, and brothers-in-law to pay respects to her late mother-in-law.
First time visiting
Ain explained in the video that this was her first participation in the annual Qingming tomb-sweeping tradition after marrying her husband in February 2025.
Throughout the video, Ain provided viewers with a detailed tour, showcasing the entrance, temples, scenic landscapes, and the serene environment of the cemetery, which she compared to a leisure park.
Ain’s husband revealed in the video that the total cost for his mother’s burial site, including the coffin and related services, was approximately RM20,000—a price he noted was relatively modest compared to other areas within Nirvana Memorial Park.

Did not participate in religious rituals
Highlighting religious sensitivity, Ain emphasized that her husband, who converted to Islam, refrained from participating in certain rituals at the memorial hall to avoid misunderstandings related to religious practices.
During their visit, Ain and her husband explored the surroundings, where they were intrigued by numerous turtle-shaped statues.
Netizens clarified in the comments that these marked a pet memorial area, explaining that turtles symbolize longevity and guardianship, and are sometimes placed at gravesites for spiritual protection and peace.

Netizens’ reaction
The video sparked lively discussions among netizens, with many praising her open-mindedness and effort in showcasing cultural diversity.

Some netizens observed that non-Muslim graves appeared significantly more luxurious compared to Muslim ones, while others clarified that such extravagance isn’t encouraged in Islamic practices.
