For some, the chance to meet someone they really fancy or have a strong connection with is too tempting to pass and they would go to great lengths to make the meetup come true.
Unfortunately, not all meetups end with a happy ending, just like how it happened to one woman who travelled across several states to meet a man but was instead met with disappointment.
M’sian woman travels to Penang from KL to meet man
In a Threads post, the OP shared the incident which led her to feel traumitised whenever the word ‘Penang’ was mentioned.
According to her, she crossed paths with a man who worked for the Penang state government when he came to Putrajaya to attend a course.

From there, they became fast friends and the man invited the OP to come over to Penang and to let him know if she ever did so.
Out of excitement, the OP took the man at his word and took five days of leave before making her way down to Penang from KL.
5 days of sadness
Upon arriving in Penang, the OP said she waited patiently for the man to appear but he never did, leaving her to spend her vacation alone.

When she returned to KL at the end of the trip, the man contacted the OP and dropped a bombshell on her: he was married in the past and now has a young child.
The incident hurt the OP so deeply that she proclaimed that she would never step foot into Penang again as the mere mention of it would flood her mind with the painful memories.
In the comment section, she clarified that it wasn’t the man’s marital status that upset her, but him lying about wanting to meet her in Penang.
Sympathy & advice from netizens
Netizens couldn’t help but feel sorry for the OP’s plight and gave her some words of advice and comfort.
‘NEVER. I mean never fly/go somewhere far just to meet a guy. If you go there with the intention to visit the place and see him at the same time, then it’s okay. There are a lot of stories of people getting scammed like this. Waste of time and money.’

‘Sis, you’re so pretty. Don’t waste your energy on this man. From what you described, he’s already married. If he were divorced or just having marital problems, it’s impossible that he wouldn’t make any effort to see you, especially if he truly wanted you. So stay away. There are plenty of single, handsome, and good men out there.’

Meanwhile, a netizen said the OP should lay the blame solely on the man who led her on, not the location where the incident took place.
