Drains are supposed to be covered at all times as failing to do so can lead to falls that may end up with severe injuries.
A woman in Kuching, Sarawak, had to be hauled out from a drain by firefighters after she fell right into it and couldn’t get out.

M’sian woman trapped inside 2m-deep drain
According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the Fire and Rescue Department received a call about the incident at 6.08am this morning near a shopping center on Jalan Simpang Tiga.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a 21-year-old woman who had fallen inside the 2m-deep (7-feet) drain and was unable to get out.
According to the woman, she was on her way to work when she stepped on the uncovered drain and fell right into it. She added that the lack of light in the surrounding area also contributed to her fall.

Firefighters launched a rescue operation and successfully pulled the woman out from the drain. They then inspected the injury she suffered to her right leg before sending her to the hospital for further treatment.
Cover believed to have been stolen
As to why the drain was uncovered in the first place, it is believed that it was stolen.
As such, the public has called upon the authorities to tighten their inspection and maintenance of drain covers in urban areas, as well as promptly replacing stolen or damaged covers.
