Getting scammed is not a pleasant thing to experience as not only does it leave us poorer, but it evokes a lot of frustration and stress when one tries to get the money back.
A woman recently went viral after she shared how she managed to get her money back from a scammer without subjecting herself to the undue stress with a move many called ingenious.
M’sian woman transfers 1 sen to scammer 20 times
In a now-viral X (formerly Twitter) post by Mom of KL, she wrote that she ordered an item on Instagram but it never arrived.

After realising that she had become a victim of a scam, she went to Facebook to do a quick check on the seller and discovered that she wasn’t alone in being scammed.
In a move to teach the scammer a lesson, the woman proceeded to make a total of 20 transactions of 1 sen each to the scammer, where she wrote ‘scammer’ in the payment detail section.
To her surprise, this seemed to spook the scammer, who texted her and promptly refunded her.

The woman added that while she was scammed of only RM53, she reiterated that she “was not one to tolerate crap like this.”
How does it work exactly?
Naturally, netizens were astounded to see how effective the method was in getting the money back and wondered how it was possible.
In the comment thread, many theorised that by making small transactions multiple times, it would raise red flags on the bank and police’s end, causing them to investigate the bank account and freeze it.
However, it must be noted that this move may not work all of the time.

Some also praised the OP for her genius move in scaring the scammer into giving her money back.

A netizen shared of how she managed to recoup RM60 from a would-be scammer, where she tricked him by sending an altered version of the transfer receipt.

Checked the FB reviews and realised I wasn’t alone.
So, I did 20 transactions of 1sen to the scammer’s account late last night. They texted me and promised a refund. Got my money back this morning! 😂
