A woman has taken to social media to warn the public of the hidden dangers of powerbanks when it’s in the midst of being charged.
She also attached photos of the aftermath of the incident, where her room and several properties were damaged following the power bank’s explosion.
Exploded while charging
In a Facebook post, Nurul Najihah wrote that she noticed her power bank’s battery was at 70% and decided to fully charge it to 100%. She then placed the power bank next to a printer, where it was placed on top of a white carpet.
15 minutes later, she heard a loud explosion similar to that of a bomb and was shocked to see that her power bank had gone up in flames.
Aside from the power bank that got completely destroyed, Nurul’s printer and gaming chair were also damaged, while her room’s wall had black scorch marks on it.
Suffered burns from explosion
Aside from damage to her property, Nurul said she also suffered burns to her right arm as the power bank was right next to her when it exploded.
Despite her shock, she managed to come quickly to her wits and grabbed some wet cloths and a bucket of water to put out the fire.
Nurul added that the power bank was bought between 2022 and 2023 within a price range of RM70 to RM100.
She also said that no one else was around at the time and admitted she had no clue about what caused the power bank to explode.
Expressed caution
Following the incident, Nurul said she no longer uses a power bank and would instead sit in front of her phone while it’s charging to prevent a fire, adding the explosion left her “traumatised”.
“The lesson here is to be careful when charging your power bank or handphone. Don’t blame the brand (if an explosion occurs).
“Don’t charge on a carpet. Charge in a safe place. Also, don’t overcharge it as any brand of power banks can catch fire.
