Whenever something’s wrong with our body, pain would usually be the first signal that would be given as a way to get our attention and resolve the issue ASAP.
A Melaka girl’s constant complaint about pain in her ear led to a rather horrifying discovery, as well as reminding her mother not to be so quick in dismissing it.
Complained to mum about ear pain
Sharing the incident on Facebook, the girl’s mother, Aqila Nasir, wrote that her daughter, Hayfa, came to her complaining of pain in her left ear on Jan 17.
However, Aqila didn’t think too much of it and brushed it aside after a quick check of Hayfa’s ear showed no cause for alarm.
I checked her ear with a flashlight but did not see anything, so I thought it was a pimple and asked her to wait until tomorrow. If the pain persisted, then we would go to the clinic.”
However, things didn’t get any better when Hayfa woke up the next day with neck pain and was lethargic throughout the day, stirring worry within Aqila.
“I shined a torch into her ear again, and this time, I noticed black debris inside her ear.
“Was it dried blood from a wound? But Hayfa told me she didn’t scratch her ears. At that moment, the thought of ticks crossed my mind,” she wrote.

Without wasting a moment, Aqila took Hayfa to the clinic and was stunned when doctors discovered hordes of ticks and their eggs inside Hayfa’s ears.
The doctors also mentioned that the ticks were most likely inside the ear for a period of time, but the pain didn’t occur until Hayfa felt it herself.
Aqila noted that it could be due to Hayfa’s high pain tolerance, but added that her husband often commented that if Hayfa complained of pain, it had to be something serious.
Following the discovery, doctors performed an extraction and cleaned Hayfa’s ear until there was no trace of the ticks left.
Towards the end of the post, Aqila reminded other parents to always take their child’s complaints of pain seriously as it could be a sign of a deeper problem.
