Malaysians are naturally kindhearted individuals who won’t hesitate to help those who are in need of assistance.
Unfortunately, this kindness has also given way to unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of it and scammed people of their money, like how this one woman experienced for herself.
‘Student’ claimed to have no cash
A WeirdKaya reader, who wished to stay anonymous, said the incident took place on Aug 17 when she was returning home after watching a movie.
At KL Sentral, she was approached by a man who claimed to be a student who was looking to return to Cyberjaya but had no cash on him.
“I told him I had no cash with me, but he told me that (sending money) via QR code was fine too. Out of pity for him, I sent him RM12 via the Touch n’ Go (TnG) e-wallet app.”

Found out about scam via TikTok
To her dismay, the woman told WeirdKaya that she later realised she had become a victim of a scam after seeing a TikTok video of a netizen warning others to be careful of woman who carried out a similar tactic at KL Sentral.

That was when I realised the guy actually showed me a TnG QR code from his photo gallery and not from the app itself.
“To be honest, I usually don’t entertain those who ask for money from me. But that one time I tried to be nice, I got scammed instead,” she lamented.
The woman told WeirdKaya that her advice to other Malaysians would be to always practice caution whenever one askes them for money, especially at KL Sentral.
“Think twice before proceeding. Also, if something feels off, just walk away,” she added.
