While most people associate Hari Raya with visits, rendang, and religious gatherings, one Malaysian family took the celebration to heart, despite not being Muslim.

In a viral TikTok video posted by @pipipipiww, also known as Fifi, she showed her household going all out for the celebration.

The video reads: “First day of Raya. My mom woke us up and told us to clean the house, arrange Raya cookies, and she even prepared Raya food. Our family is Christian.”

They were seen cleaning the house, arranging Raya cookies in the living room, and even cooking festive dishes like ketupat, rice, and noodle soup. The twist? They weren’t even celebrating it in the religious sense.

It’s not like we’re expecting any guests,” she wrote in the caption.

So… why the Raya hype?

Speaking to WeirdKaya, Fifi said her dad has Chinese heritage, but they don’t really celebrate Chinese New Year or follow any Chinese cultural traditions.

Instead, their family usually celebrates Christmas and Easter. But every Raya without fail, her mom will go all out.

Turns out, her mom grew up in a big family with Muslim relatives, so celebrating Raya used to be part of the tradition.

Even though the family doesn’t do big visits anymore as the older relatives passed away, her mom still keeps the spirit alive by cooking Raya food, cleaning the house, and even buying new Raya outfits for herself.

I think she misses those moments and wants to relive them, so we just let her do that. Its fun anyway, and we get to eat Raya food.”

Malaysians totally vibed with it

Fifi’s video struck a chord with netizens, especially those who aren’t Muslim but still get into the Raya mood every year.

Some joked that Fifi’s mother is the next level of FOMO (Fear of missing out) and Fifi can’t agree more.

Fifi admitted she didn’t expect the response to be so positive, and some people even thanked her for appreciating Raya as a non-Muslim.

I feel like Aidilfitri is one of those festive seasons that everyone should cherish, no matter their race or religion.

I always get so excited when Ramadan and Raya come around, especially because of the Ramadan Bazaar!

There are so many delicious foods that you can only find during this time, and the whole atmosphere just feels so lively and warm.”

She also shared that the way Malaysians come together to celebrate everyone’s traditions, whether it’s Hari Raya, CNY, Deepavali, or Christmas, is something that makes this country feel truly special.
