M’sian Woman Left With RM100K ‘Ah Long’ Debt Due To Daughter’s Unpaid Loans

Meanwhile, her daughter is trying to look for a better life in the US.
A heart-wrenching TikTok post by @mhomalaysia has brought attention to a Malaysian mother who is enduring a staggering RM100,000 debt with loan sharks—all in a desperate bid to help her daughter overcome financial struggles.

The Malaysian International Humanitarian Organization (MHO), known for its advocacy against exploitation and financial abuse, shared her story through its Secretary-General, Hishamuddin Hashim, in a video.

The woman, who remains unnamed, described her life as a struggle, stating,

Her ordeal began two years ago when she initially borrowed RM600 to help settle her daughter’s debts, which amounted to approximately RM400,000, including card bills and bank loans.

When asked why she took on such a significant risk, the mother said simply,

Because she doesn’t have the money, and I am the mother, so I got to help her.”

Her daughter had left for the United States in search of a better life, leaving the mother to manage the financial fallout.

With her part-time business struggling and her cash flow drying up, the mother was unable to secure formal loans due to her age.

She turned to loan sharks as a last resort, initially managing to keep up with the interest payments.

However, the debt quickly snowballed to an unmanageable figure. Although a police report she filed previously relieved her from paying older debts, she still has around RM100,000 owed to two different loan sharks.

In the video, Hishamuddin urged her not to make any further payments, reminding her that loan sharks operate illegally and their claims are not enforceable under Malaysian law.

This heartbreaking case sheds light on the lengths some parents go to support their children, often at great personal cost.

It also highlights the dire need for better financial safety nets and awareness about the risks of illegal moneylenders.
