A woman recently shared a bizarre encounter online, where she claimed she might have unknowingly eaten biawak (monitor lizard) meat after receiving food from a stranger.
According to her post on Thread, she went for a swim at a river when an elderly man suddenly offered her nasi ayam penyet with curry meat.
Discovered something odd the next day
At first, she thought nothing of it and brought the food home.
She only cooked the curry the following day, and that’s when she noticed something unusual about the meat inside.
The meat had scales and the skin looked dark and rough,” she wrote.

Out of curiosity, she searched online and found that the images matched monitor lizard meat.
Still in disbelief but suspicious
In a follow up post, she stated she also suspect that it could be porcupine meat, but dismissed the thought after comparing photos.
Porcupine meat has lighter skin. The one I got had dark, scaly skin. I think it really was monitor lizard meat,” she added.
Despite her suspicions, she joked that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience:
Never mind lah, at least I got to taste it once 😆🤣.”
Netizens’ comments
The post quickly went viral on Threads, with many netizens raising concerns about the risks of accepting food from strangers.
“If strangers give you food, don’t simply eat it okay.”

One also pointed out that monitor lizard is actually something some people enjoy eating.
“Back when I was studying, somehow we ended up talking about monitor lizards. One of my friends said monitor lizard meat is delicious. But he’s not Muslim though.”
