With Chinese New Year officially beginning tomorrow, certain stalls have taken advantage of the festive occasion to secretly raise prices, hoping that customers wouldn’t notice.
A woman recently took to social media to complain about how she was charged what she believed was an exorbitant price for ‘taukua’ (bean curd) at a stall in Penang.
M’sian woman rants about being charged RM5 for bean curd
Taking to the Facebook group Penang Foodie Group to share the incident, the woman named Karen Hooi wrote that she patronised a mixed rice stall at the Pulau Tikus market.

When she asked the lady in charge of the stall what was the price of the bean curd, the lady told her that it costs RM5, a figure which left Karen flabbergasted.
I told her that the market price for taukua didn’t increase, you dare charge me RM5 for taukua?
“Did our government send the officer to check the price during festive season or did they just simply increase the price at their happiness?” she fumed.
Karen also added that together with the bean curd, rice, and two other dishes, her mixed rice amounted to RM12, which she felt was “overcharged”.

Reactions
In the comment section, there was a variety of reactions towards Karen’s complaint about being overcharged for bean curd.
Some agreed with her rant and called upon the authorities to take action against stalls that raise prices at their whim and fancy.

However, some didn’t seem surprised by the pricing, with one noting that Pulau Tikus has long been known to an area catered for wealthy individuals.

Another suggested that Karen should walk away from the stall there and then if she found the price to be unjustified.
