However, not everyone is thrilled over being addressed by such terms like this woman, who took to social media to voice her displeasure.
M’sian woman offended over being called ‘Auntie’
In a Threads post shared by @azrinalasa, she expressed her annoyance over how a salesperson addressed her while she was out shopping.
Why the sales guy addressed me as ‘Auntie’? “Auntie, this colour no longer has the size.” Shouldn’t it be ‘Puan’?
“I’m a customer, and I have never met you before. Do you refer to all your older customers as ‘Aunties’ and ‘Uncles’? So strange la…Gen Zs nowadays,” she ranted.
Netizens offer mixed reactions
The post soon found its way to the Malaysian subreddit, where it sparked a variety of differing views from netizens.
Some felt the OP was throwing a childish tantrum over something so petty and said there was no reason to be offended by being called an ‘auntie’.
On the other hand, some agreed with the OP’s stance, saying salespeople should address male customers as ‘Sir/Mr’ and female customers as ‘Madam/Miss’.
Meanwhile, others felt it was unfair for the OP to pin the blame entirely on all Gen Zs just because of one unpleasant experience, with one saying they have seen similar occurrences among the older generation.
