M’sian Woman Hit With RM1.1mil Electricity Bill Due To Crypto Mining By Tenant

Yikes.
Whenever we rent out a room to someone, it’s with the trust that he/she will take good care of the place and not incur unnecessary high costs.

A woman in Ipoh had a shock of her life when she was served a notice by the national utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) informing her of an RM1.1 million bill she had allegedly racked up.

In a post shared by Queenie Jie Jie on Facebook yesterday (Dec 30), she showed a photo of a letter issued by TNB to her concerning an astronomical electricity bill that was incurred under her name.

Based on the letter, the total amount she owed to TNB was an astonishing RM1,142,511.75.

According to the caption, her troubles began when she rented out a unit at the upper floors of the building through a legitimate agency.

Unbeknownst to her, that unit quickly turned into the base of a cryptocurrency mining operation by the tenant.

When she discovered the illegal scheme, she immediately reported it to the authorities. Unfortunately, she found herself being held accountable for the RM1.1 million electricity bill instead of the tenant.

The woman lamented that all of this took place within a span of two months, adding that she probably had to pay a visit to the God of the Underworld to settle the bill.

According to a property management guru, he told TRP that the matter is exacerbated by crypto miners who swiftly turn shop lots into mining operations without the landlord’s knowledge.

He added that property owners and agents have also contributed to the problem with their over-eagerness to rent their properties out.

‘How is this fair?’

In the comment section, netizens were shocked by Queenie’s post and questioned why TNB is ‘punishing’ her for the misdeeds of her tenant.

‘If it’s a family, how are going to pay?! Even if TNB gives a 50% discount, it’s still RM500,000. How is this fair?’

‘Oh my God. I read it twice and it’s millions of Ringgit? Did you rent the place to crypto miners? TNB doesn’t go after those who stole electricity but the landlord instead.’

Some advised landlords to remember changing the utility bills to the tenant’s name so that they won’t be the ones stuck with the bill.
