A heartwarming moment at a durian stall in Kepala Batas, Penang, has gone viral — all thanks to a kind-hearted Malay woman who stepped in to help translate for three Chinese male tourists using her fluent Mandarin.
The 34-year-old durian seller, Mohamad Amin, shared the video on his TikTok, capturing the wholesome exchange that has since racked up over a million views.
Customer stepped in to help
In the video, the tourists appeared confused as they tried to communicate, prompting the woman, who happened to be another customer at the stall, to voluntarily step in and help.
Without being asked, she assisted Mohamad Amin in explaining the different durian types and prices, all in smooth Mandarin.
“I usually rely on Google Translate to talk to tourists who don’t speak English,” Amin told Harian Metro.
But I was really lucky that day. She was just there and offered to help, and that’s when I realised she could speak Mandarin fluently.”
“Didn’t expect it to blow up online”
Amin, who works as a bank employee by day, said the video was filmed last Saturday and uploaded simply as a personal memento. He didn’t expect it to blow up online.
I wasn’t even checking TikTok after I posted it. I only opened the app the day before yesterday and was shocked to see so many views and comments,” he said.
Grateful for the unexpected attention, Amin said the video has not only warmed hearts but also helped promote his stall during durian season, which lasts until the end of July.
“I only sell durians once a year during the season, so I’ll be operating the stall after work until late July. I hope more people will come by and support,” he added with a smile.
