At weddings, couples would promise to be there for each other “in both health and sickness” before tying the knot. Sadly, not everyone takes this part of their wedding vow seriously.
A woman was left heartbroken after he husband decided to call it quits on their marriage after she was found to be suffering from breast cancer.
Divorced by husband over breast cancer diagnosis
According to a report by Harian Metro, the 47-year-old woman named Noraniza Ismail said she and her husband had been married for 13 years and shared two kids together while raising another child from her previous marriage.
In 2021, Noraniza’s husband fell ill due to complications caused by diabetes and was bedridden. As such, she had to care for him as well as work to support the family.
In August 2022, she noticed a lump in her right breast and had to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Her husband didn’t provide much support during this time as he had lost his job during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
According to Noraniza, her husband’s demeanor began to change when she was first diagnosed with the disease.
He was okay at first. But things changed when I told him I needed surgery and that one of my breasts had to be removed.
Fast forward to May of this year, Noraniza was served a letter from the Syariah Court informing her that her husband wanted a divorce due to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Needless to say, this left her feeling deeply betrayed and hurt by her husband’s lack of support and empathy.
I feel upset. When he was sick, I took care of him. But now that I’m sick, it’s like he’s avoiding me.
“I deeply regret neglecting my health just to care for him. Because when it was my turn, he didn’t appreciate anything I did for him and completely ignored me,” she said, adding that the delay in cancer treatment had caused her condition to deteriorate further.
Despite her unfortunate circumstance, Noraniza said she’s ready to win her battle against cancer and said she doesn’t mind losing her breast as long as it lets her be healthy enough to take care of her kids.
