A father shared how an agreement to his daughter’s request to travel to Perlis with her boyfriend ended in tragedy when their car caught fire along the North-South Expressway near the Jitra toll plaza in Kedah.
The 19-year-old woman had been working at a shopping mall in Bukit Dumbar while her boyfriend was from Perlis.
According to her father, his daughter planned to take leave on Jan 19 and intended to travel to Perlis after finishing her shift on the evening of Jan 18.
He said his daughter informed her mother earlier that day that she planned to go to Perlis with her boyfriend, according to Sin Chew Daily.
Her parents were initially against the trip and advised her not to go. However, she insisted on proceeding.
‘I gave in so she wouldn’t be upset’
Later that afternoon, she messaged her father to ask if she could go. Knowing that refusing would upset her, he eventually replied with a simple “Ok”.
The boyfriend picked her up after her shift and couple were believed to have had supper before continuing their drive towards Perlis.
At around 1.05am on Jan 19, their Honda Civic was involved in an incident near the Jitra toll plaza on the northbound lane of the North-South Expressway and the vehicle caught fire.
Fire and rescue teams arrived after receiving an emergency call. By the time the blaze was brought under control, the car had been severely damaged.
The couple were later found inside the vehicle and were confirmed dead at the scene. Their bodies were handed over to police for post-mortem examinations and DNA tests to confirm their identities.
Authorities said the identification process may take three to four days due to the condition of the remains.
Police and fire forensics teams are still investigating the cause of the incident. No further details have been released at the time of reporting.
