A woman who was on her way home after picking her teenage daughter back from school met her tragic end in an accident with a lorry yesterday (Feb 12).
According to China Press, the accident took place at about 2pm near Jit Sin Secondary School in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Crushed after crashing into lorry
According to the Chinese daily, the victim, Low Hooi Meng (transliteration), had just picked up her daughter from school before she collided with a lorry at a junction nearby.
Following the collision, the front part of Low’s BMW sedan was badly damaged due to impact.
Low got trapped in the driver’ seat while her daughter was stuck in the rear seat. Unfortunately, Low succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead when firefighters rushed over.
Low’s daughter sustained severe injuries to her eye and leg and was rushed to Hospital Sungai Bakap for treatment.
Lorry driver unhurt
Meanwhile, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said in a statement that the lorry driver was uninjured in the crash.
It added that a report was lodged at 2.45pm and a fire engine and six firefighters from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the rescue team used specialised rescue equipment to extricate the victims from the vehicle, which was successfully carried out at 3.05pm.
“The deceased car driver’s body was handed over to the police for further action, while her daughter was sent to the hospital for further treatment. The entire rescue operation concluded at 4.11pm.”
