Since the launch of the Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) targeted petrol subsidy on Sept 27, social media has been flooded with stories from people experiencing the program for the first time.
One such story came from a petrol station cashier who shared his encounter with a customer who completely misunderstood how the subsidy worked.

Thought it was free
According to the cashier, a woman came to the petrol station asking to pump RM50 worth of RON95 petrol.
However, when asked whether she wanted to pay using cash or e-wallet, the woman appeared shocked and claimed she thought the program meant free petrol for eligible Malaysians.
As reported by mStar, she believed it was similar to the MySara aid program, where recipients did not need to pay out of pocket.
I was tired of explaining to her, but she still did not get it. Where does she think the government is going to give free 300 liters of petrol?”
For those who are still unfamiliar with it, Budi95 is a subsidy initiative where eligible Malaysians can purchase RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per liter instead of RM2.05.

The program comes with a monthly quota of 300 liters per person, but it is not free.
Cancelled the purchase after learning the truth
The cashier said once he explained that the program only offered a discounted rate rather than free petrol, the woman canceled her plan to refuel.
The cashier added he was frustrated because she even blamed him for the misunderstanding, adding,
This is a subsidy. Does she not know what a subsidy means?”
