A Malaysian woman recently shared her frustration online after being asked to contribute RM1,000 for her sibling’s upcoming wedding reception, even though she is currently struggling financially.
According to her post, the wedding reception is set to take place after Hari Raya and will be held together with her brother’s baby’s aqiqah ceremony.
While she understands that family events often require everyone to chip in, she admitted that the timing could not have been worse for her.

RM1,000 in one month
In her post shared on Threads, the woman explained that her mother had asked her to support the event with RM1,000.
However, she said she is currently “very tight” on money. Her savings have already been depleted and her monthly salary is just enough to cover basic expenses.
She questioned how she was expected to come up with an additional RM1,000 within a month, especially when she is already living paycheque to paycheque.
Despite this, she stressed that it is not that she does not want to contribute.
Not unwilling, just unable

The woman clarified that she genuinely wants to help her family if she can. She had already explained her financial situation to her mother, hoping for some understanding.
However, she suspects that her family may assume she still has extra savings because she used to be someone who consistently set money aside in the past.
As a result, she feels burdened by the expectation placed on her, particularly when it is not her event.
She expressed that it feels heavy knowing she has to figure out how to raise RM1,000 for a celebration that is not her own, while struggling to stay afloat financially.
More than just about money
Beyond the financial strain, the situation has also taken an emotional toll on her.
She shared that what hurts the most is not only the money, but the feeling that her circumstances are not being fully understood.
At times, she admitted wishing that things were different within her family dynamic.
She added that she currently lives far from her family partly to safeguard her mental health and to reduce conflict.
While she emphasised that she loves her family, she described the situation as exhausting.
Her post has since resonated with many who understand the pressure of balancing family obligations with personal financial limitations, especially during major life events.
