[UPDATED] M’sian Woman And 6yo Daughter Die After Drowning At Pulau Ketam

The woman was reportedly plagued by family problems.
Tragedy struck at Pulau Ketam, Selangor, when a woman and her 6-year-old daughter perished after both of them jumped into the waters early this morning.

The incident has since deeply shocked and saddened residents and tourists, who wonder what might have driven the duo to such a a tragic end.

In a chilling CCTV clip shared by Oriental Daily News, it showed the woman walking towards the end of a pier with her daughter before disappearing completely beneath the waters.

A closer look at the footage showed the duo squatting by the pier at the 6:39:52am timestamp before the scene cuts to the girl standing up and pointing toward the sea, while the woman remained squatted beside her.

Both of them were also seen chatting and interacting affectionately before the girl walks into her mother’s arms in an embrace before the footage ended at 6:41:24am.

Another CCTV facing the pier showed the woman carrying a crossbody bag and walking along the pier at the 6:23:23am mark, while dragging a suitcase in one hand and holding a plastic bag in the other.

Her daughter is seen following closely behind before both disappeared from the CCTV’s view at 6:23:43am.

Former Pulau Ketam village chief, Cai Quanzhi (transliteration), told the Chinese daily that the duo were believed to have arrived from Singapore yesterday (Aug 5) and had checked into a hotel on the island.

He said an eyewitness saw them plunge into the water at 6am from a pavilion located near the island’s volunteer fire station.

“Their bodies were recovered at around 7am and although medical personnel tried to save them by performing CPR, both of them didn’t survive.”

Sources told Sin Chew Daily that the woman was a local who lived in Shah Alam and formerly worked in Singapore.

Family problems may be cause behind tragedy

Cai added the woman had reportedly left behind a suicide note, where it is suspected that family issues may have driven her to take the lives of her own and daughter.

However, he said police are currently probing the matter in order to reveal what actually happened.

The bodies have since been sent to Klang General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
