M’sian Woman Allegedly Told To Cover Up After She Wore Sleeveless Top To JPJ Office

Another case.
A woman claimed that she fell victim to yet another case of attire policing while she was running an errand at the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) office in Bandar Permaisuri, KL.

In a Facebook post, the woman named Adeline wrote that she was allegedly told to cover her arms as her sleeveless top had apparently violated the dress code.

This inevitably left her feeling frustrated and upset, where she exclaimed:

Don’t you think it’s ridiculous ? Please change your dinosaur law. I’m not wearing spaghetti straps and expose my top.”

She also claimed in the comments that a man was given a sarong to wear as he was found to have violated the dress code too.

What happened

In a brief interview with WeirdKaya, Adeline said was about to scan a QR code to get her queue number at the counter when an officer and a security guard told her that her sleeveless top was unacceptable.

“When the officer asked me whether I had a jacket, I told her I didn’t have one as I thought wearing long pants was sufficient. Furthermore, I wore a sleeveless top due to the hot weather.

“The officer then said she couldn’t serve me due to my attire and I got upset as I had endured the morning congestion just to reach the JPJ office at 8.30am,” she recounted.

Adeline added that she when informed the officer that she’d be filing a complaint, the latter told her to go ahead with it while reiterating that she was merely following standard SOPs at government offices.

Thankfully, she was able to get a queue ticket in the end and didn’t have to borrow her husband’s outer clothing to cover herself up.

Adeline also tagged Transport Minister Anthony Loke in the post but neither he nor JPJ have responded to the incident at the time of writing.

Unfortunately, alleged cases of attire policing aren’t new in Malaysia, with many voicing outrage over it:
