A woman who was previously accused of having two husbands in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, has been confirmed to be legally divorced from her first husband since June 2022, putting an end to speculation that had gone viral online.
According to Kosmo!, Kelantan State Executive Councillor for Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information and Regional Relations, Mohd Asri Mat Daud said both the woman, who is in her 30s, and her former husband verified that their marriage had already ended more than two years ago.
He said the confirmation was obtained after both individuals came forward to give their statements to the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jaheaik) at the Tanah Merah Religious Office.
According to Mohd Asri, the woman later married another man in Songkhla, Thailand, in November last year.
This means the claim that she has two husbands is not accurate, as she only has one husband at present,” he said when contacted.
Investigation still ongoing for other matters
Despite the clarification, Mohd Asri said Jaheaik is still looking into other aspects of the case, although issues related to marriage registration have already been dealt with.
He added that the investigation is being conducted under Section 38 and Section 40 of the Islamic Family Law Enactment 2002.
Section 38 concerns false declarations made to obtain approval, while Section 40 relates to offences connected to the solemnisation of marriage.
Case surfaced after family dispute
The case first drew attention after a woman claimed her brother had been deceived by his wife, alleging that the woman had secretly married another man more than a year ago.
The matter escalated on December 6 after Nur, 35, along with two police officers and several residents, went to the house of the woman’s second husband at Batu 11 in Tanah Merah to verify the claim.
Jaheaik has since confirmed that the woman was not married to two men at the same time, addressing the confusion surrounding the viral allegation.
