Many Malaysians can relate to the struggles of keeping up with rising costs while feeling stuck in the same place, one man’s viral post lays it all bare.
A 36-year-old Malaysian recently shared a raw and emotional confession on the Facebook page 八卦部门, questioning whether he’s truly living or merely enduring day by day.
In his post, he described a life where even small comforts feel like luxuries.
I don’t dare to switch on the air conditioner at night. I smoke only the cheapest cigarettes. My only entertainment is scrolling through my phone. Honestly, I can’t tell if I’m living, or just enduring.”
Has a car & condo, but feels empty inside
He revealed that he owns an Axia and a small condominium, things that might make life look decent from the outside. But to him, they are just “shells” hiding an emptiness within.

His salary has remained stagnant for years, while the cost of living continues to climb.
Each payday feels like a short breath of relief, but the money runs out within three days after paying off loans, bills, petrol and groceries.
The rest of the month becomes a constant exercise in cutting corners, spending less on dinner if lunch costs more, buying fewer groceries if petrol prices rise.
Even weekends are frugal, with the occasional cup of kopi O being the only treat.

What frustrates him further is seeing people around him go on overseas trips “like it costs nothing”.
They say life is short, enjoy it while you can. But some people are born on the starting line of enjoyment, while some don’t even have a track, just standing far away watching.”
Regrets over past choices
He admits wondering if life could have turned out differently had he studied harder or chosen another path.

The man wonders if, with different choices, he could now afford to travel once in a while, buy things he enjoys, and have more freedom in life, instead of feeling stuck in a small space, watching time slowly pass him by.
For some, his confession was a sobering reminder that financial stability doesn’t always mean happiness.
