Three years ago, a woman married with dreams of a happy life, today, she finds herself feeling more like her husband’s personal ATM.
According to a report by mStar, the anonymous woman took to social media to share her struggles, revealing that her husband unexpectedly quit his stable job with a monthly salary of over RM3,000 shortly after their marriage.
Invest all his savings into family business venture
Without consulting her, he invested all his savings into a family business venture, which ultimately collapsed.
This left them drowning in debt, severely damaging their credit ratings and forcing them to seek assistance from Malaysia’s Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK).
Initially, she had secured a job in Singapore but was overwhelmed by stress and eventually returned home, accepting a local job paying RM2,000 per month.
Work three jobs to manage everything
Despite her modest salary, she found herself solely responsible for all household expenses, including home loans, car payments, utility bills, and fuel.
“I work three jobs just to manage everything,” she explained.
He keeps promising he’ll repay me once his business takes off, but after all these years, I’ve never seen a single cent.”
Her financial burdens grew heavier when she took out bank loans and even became a guarantor for family loans, all in efforts to help clear her husband’s debts.
Despite continuous reassurances from her husband, repayments never came.
“Treats me like an ATM”
Further compounding her disappointment, when her husband withdrew money from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF), none of it was used to alleviate their household expenses.
I stay up late working, yet he refuses to find a job, claiming it’s too exhausting,” she said bitterly. “He treats me like an ATM, always reaching out for money.”
The woman admitted feeling suffocated by her circumstances, at times even wishing for an accident on her way home from work as an escape from her hardship.
Trying to take control back
Amid prolonged disappointment and exhaustion, she resolved to take control of her life.
“I’ve started hiding part of my earnings, no longer sharing my full salary details with him. I refuse to be drained any further,” she declared.
In her post, she urged others planning to marry to seriously discuss practical matters like finances and responsibilities beforehand.
Love alone isn’t enough; the foundation of marriage is responsibility, communication, and financial management,” she warned.
“Don’t assume everything will automatically improve after marriage. Choosing the wrong partner can lead to lifelong suffering.”
