A simple Chinese New Year gathering in Sarawak has captured attention after a Malaysian Chinese uncle went the extra mile to host a private open house just for his Malay friend and his family.
From sourcing halal food to buying brand new cutlery, the gesture reflected a friendship that has stood the test of time.

From almost fighting to 40 years of friendship
The story was shared by the uncle’s son, Joseph, in a video post.
According to him, the two men first met at work decades ago and almost got into a fight. 40 years later, they remain close friends.
“One sends pineapples from his farm, my dad’s favourite, and the other does impromptu open houses,” Joseph wrote.
Despite not hosting an open house in years, his parents found a reason to do so this year.
“Only in Sarawak. Truly the land of love,” he added.
A private open house just for his granddaughters
Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, Joseph shared that the gathering took place on the first day of Chinese New Year.
His father’s Malay friend had mentioned that his granddaughters had never attended a CNY open house before.
So his dad decided to throw a private one just for them.
It was organised on short notice. The halal dishes were sourced from his sister’s house, and his mum even bought brand new cutlery to ensure their guests would feel comfortable.

It also had to be done on the first day of CNY, as the fasting month would be starting soon.
A reunion 20 years in the making
Joseph shared that while this was not the first time they had hosted an open house, it had been a long time since the family last did so.
The visit was especially meaningful for him.
Uncle hasn’t seen me in 20 years, so it was a really wholesome reunion. But he can still remember that I loved Manchester United when I was a small boy,” he said.
At first, everyone in the extended family felt shy.
But as the meal went on, conversations began to flow more naturally. Joseph even found himself having spirited discussions with the granddaughters about content creators.

What started as a simple gesture turned into a memorable reunion, showing how a friendship that began with tension decades ago has grown into something deeply meaningful.
