A Malaysian man vandalised the venue where a lion dance competition was taking place in Singapore after he was promised a lucrative sum of money to carry out the act.
34-year-old Yap Seng Hin was eventually arrested by police and jailed after he pleaded guilty in court.
Lured by RM4,600 offer
According to CNA, Yap got a phone call in Sept 2024 from an unknown person who promised him S$1,500 (approx. RM4,600) in exchange for a “job” at Ngee Ann City.
Although Yap initially rejected the offer, the person called him again with the same offer and he eventually relented as he needed the money.

He then followed the caller’s instructions to board a van containing money and bags of red paint at Newton Food Centre, which would take him to Ngee Ann City.
Threw red paint at competition venue
Upon arriving at the location, Yap went to a window located at the the sixth floor of Ngee Ann City and threw two bags of red paint from the carpark to an area where a lion dance competition was taking place.
Thankfully, no injures were reported although the paint landed near the judges’ table.

Police were later called and a cleaner got rid of the paint at a cost of S$1,046.40 (approx. RM3,200).
However, court documents didn’t reveal whether Yap got paid for throwing the paint.
Jailed 6 weeks
On Oct 15, 2024, Yap was arrested by police but was released on bail the next day.
In court, Yap pleaded guilty to one count of committing a rash act and the prosecution sought for at least eight weeks’ imprisonment as the bags of paint were tossed from a height into a crowd.

He was sentenced to six weeks in jail and ordered to pay the cleanup cost, of which he risks an additional five days in jail if he fails to do so.
