While most students were surrounded by family when checking their SPM results, it was a different story for Nur Qalidah Farhana Mohd. Azman, 18.
According to Kosmo!, the bright student from Sekolah Menengah Sains Muzaffar Shah, Ayer Keroh, was working at a drink stall at the Pagoh R&R in Johor when she received the surprise of her life.
Checked her results while at work
Qalidah said she quietly checked her results online around 10am while manning the counter. She was shocked to discover that she had scored 9As.
“I stole a quick moment to check using my phone and I was so shocked when I saw 9As,” she said.
I immediately called my mum and brother. My mum cried and couldn’t believe it. Honestly, it still feels like a dream.”
Worked at the stall since Ramadan
Qalidah, the youngest of five siblings, has been working at the stall since Ramadan to save up money for university.
She dreams of furthering her studies in Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP).
Her mother, Endon Dol Alim, 53, works as a school cleaner, while her father, Mohd. Azman Selamat, 55, earns a living as a construction worker.
Thanked her mother for her support
Despite their modest means, Qalidah said her parents’ constant support and prayers gave her the motivation to succeed.
They never promised me anything if I scored well, but their support was everything. My mum always said, ‘Study hard, don’t end up like us.’ I’ve held on to those words until today,” she said, holding back tears.
Her story has since inspired many, showing that with determination and support, anything is possible—even when success comes in the middle of a work shift.
