It’s heartbreaking to imagine a 13-year-old who still can’t read, but for one teacher, that unimaginable situation became a reality.
The teacher revealed that she was invigilating a Bahasa Melayu exam for Form 1 students when she noticed something unusual.
One boy wasn’t writing actual answers but he was copying the questions word for word into the answer section.
She approached him and gently asked if he could read. To her surprise and sadness, the student smiled and admitted, “I can’t read.”

“How has he been learning for the past 6 months?”
According to mStar, the teacher was heartbroken by his response and questioned how he had made it through six months of school without anyone realising this.
She recalled feeling extremely sad, wondering, “How is it that after six months in school, we’re only now realising that he can’t read?”
She also mentioned that she teaches the boy Mathematics and had noticed he would often write incoherent answers but it never crossed her mind that he might not be able to read at all.
When asked if he was learning to read at home, the boy simply said no.
What happened in primary school?
The story has since raised serious questions about the education system, particularly in primary school.
