M’sian Stunned After One Fried Prawn At Nasi Kandar Stall Costs RM21.20

Is RM21 for one prawn normal?
A Malaysian diner was left shocked after adding just one fried prawn to his nasi kandar meal, only to find out it cost a hefty RM21.20.

The man shared photos of his meal and receipt on social media, saying he deliberately took only one prawn to try it out but never expected the price to be that high.

I purposely took one prawn to try, didn’t expect the price to be like this 🤣,” he wrote.

Receipt sparks online debate

Based on the receipt he shared, the RM21.20 prawn was listed as “U2-UDANG”, making it the most expensive item on his plate, even pricier than the fried chicken, extra rice, egg, and drinks.

His total bill came up to RM37.50, with the single prawn accounting for more than half of the total cost.

“One prawn RM21? Cry already”

Netizens quickly flooded the comments, many expressing disbelief at the price.

“One fried prawn for RM21… I’d cry,” one commenter said.

Others joked that ordering seafood at mamak or nasi kandar stalls has become risky.

“Mamak stall prawns and squid are exactly what I avoid now,” another wrote.

Some compared it to cheaper experiences elsewhere, saying similar prawns cost much less in other states.

“I ate nasi kandar in Penang recently; one fried prawn was RM8 only. This one RM21.20, crazy,” a netizen commented.

Questions over pricing and SST

A few netizens suggested reporting the stall to authorities, while others questioned how SST was charged on the bill.

“If each dish already includes SST, why is SST charged again on the total?” one asked.

Others treated it as a lesson learned, joking that the man should try squid or crab next — if he dares.

“Try squid next time,” one joked.

“Seafood now needs mental preparation”

While seafood prices can vary depending on size and location, many agreed on one thing ordering prawns or squid at nasi kandar stalls now requires mental and financial preparation.

As one commenter summed it up: “Prices are out of control these days.”
