A story of grit and determination has been making waves after Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) shared it on their official Facebook page.
Muhammad Zahirul Hakim Bin Zali rode his motorcycle alone for eight hours from Sepang to Perlis, carrying all his essentials including a backpack and a bucket, just to register as a new student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Technology (FKTE).

Choosing the cheapest way to chase his dream
Zahirul, who enrolled in the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology (Robotics and Automation Technology) programme, explained that travelling long distances was nothing new to him.
Since his diploma days, the PLUS Highway had been his second home. He used to take buses or the ETS train, but one-way tickets could cost up to RM100.
With his beloved motorcycle, the journey cost him only around RM30.
More than saving money, he said the long rides taught him about patience, discipline, and courage as he chased his dream of earning a degree.
Did not want to burden his family
Zahirul also shared that his decision was about more than just saving money for himself.

As the eldest of six siblings, he knew his parents had to provide for his younger brothers and sisters too.
Travelling this way meant he could continue his studies without adding to the family’s financial burden.
At first, his father, Mr. Zali, was reluctant to let him travel so far alone. But Zahirul proved himself to be a responsible rider. He did not speed recklessly, always followed traffic rules, stayed in the correct lane, and made safety a top priority.
Finally made it to UniMAP
That determination and courage eventually brought him to UniMAP, where he will begin a new chapter in his life as a university student.
Never be afraid to try, but never get too complacent when you’re comfortable,” Zahirul said.
