Ever wish you didn’t have to touch a dirty trash can?
Well, a student from Syscore Academy has come up with a solution: a smart trash bin that opens and closes with just your voice.
This innovative project was recently shared in a viral TikTok video, where the female student demonstrated how the trash bin responds to voice commands.
With a simple “open” or “close,” the lid of the bin activates on its own, offering a cleaner, touch-free experience.
How microbit technology powers the smart bin
But what sets this trash bin apart is its ability to do more than just respond to voice.
The design also recognises physical movements around it, thanks to the use of microbit technology.

According to Syscore Academy, this technology detects movement and enhances the bin’s functionality, making it not only a high-tech solution but an eco-friendly one as well.
In the demonstration, the student showed how the bin’s lid would automatically open and close based on verbal commands, proving just how easy and practical the innovation is.
Reducing germ exposure with a touch-free solution
As impressive as the technology is, the real value lies in the bin’s practicality.
Trash cans are often breeding grounds for germs, with many people unknowingly touching them, increasing the risk of contamination.

This touch-free solution eliminates that issue, allowing users to dispose of their trash without having to touch the bin, reducing exposure to harmful bacteria.
As more people seek ways to maintain hygiene, this innovation couldn’t have come at a better time.
The video quickly went viral, and it wasn’t long before netizens began flooding the comment section with their admiration for the student’s work
‘Good job. Hope you become a successful individual one day, making Malaysia proud,’ wrote one TikTok user.
‘Congratulations, we had this idea before, but our goal couldn’t reach this level. Good luck, keep going!‘, another said.
