Attending a wedding is not just about showing up for the celebration. It also comes with an unspoken responsibility to behave respectfully and protect the dignity of the couple on their special day.
Recently, a controversial trend involving wedding guests giving condoms as gifts to newlyweds has sparked outrage online, with many questioning how such behaviour could be considered acceptable.
Crossing the line
The issue gained attention after a professional makeup artist shared her frustration on social media, calling out what she described as increasingly inappropriate conduct at wedding receptions.
Reported by mStar, she highlighted incidents where guests arrived with packs of condoms and presented them openly to the bride and groom. In some cases, the items were reportedly draped around the couple’s necks while guests danced and posed for photos.
According to her, such actions were not playful or humorous but a clear display of disrespect and poor judgement.
‘This has nothing to do with money’
She stressed that the problem was not about wealth or the ability to afford expensive gifts.
She pointed out that being poor or financially struggling was never an excuse for humiliating others. What mattered, she said, was basic education, common sense, and manners.
She also emphasised the importance of choosing the right group of friends, noting that a person’s social circle plays a major role in shaping their values and behaviour.
What made the situation worse, she said, was that these guests were welcomed warmly and treated to food, only to return the gesture with gifts that embarrassed the couple in front of family members and other guests.
Some of the incidents were also recorded and uploaded onto social media, turning what should have been a private celebration into public ridicule.
Apology videos missed the point
She criticised follow up apology videos that appeared after the backlash, saying they failed to address the real issue.
Instead of apologising for their actions, some guests framed their apologies as if the couple were the ones at fault or embarrassed, when in reality, she said, the shame lay with those who brought the inappropriate gifts.
According to her, this was not an isolated incident but a reflection of a deeper problem that would continue unless people learned to value respect over attention seeking behaviour.
She concluded by urging people to surround themselves with friends who understand boundaries, regardless of their background, as long as they are respectful and well mannered.
