As its name suggests, economy rice, or also known as chap fan, has long been a popular choice among working Malaysians thanks to its wide variety of dishes being offered at affordable prices.
In recent years however, there has also been a spate of incidents where prices are no longer what it used to be, leading to consumers having to pay more; sometimes way more than they should.
Mโsian shocked over being charged more than RM20 for economy rice
In a Xiaohongshu (XHS) post shared by a netizen two days ago, it showed a plate of economy rice he had ordered at a stall in Cheras.
In the photo, it showed a plate of white rice accompanied by lady fingers, cabbage, a piece of meat which was divided into three pieces, an egg, and a dollop of sauce.

However, the real kicker came when the OP was told the economy rice cost over RM20, which left him feeling bewildered.
This is my first time eating economy rice here for RM20+. Is it me who ate an expensive meal or has the prices been like this all this while?โ he questioned in the caption.
โYou got cooked, broโ
In the comment section, netizens were equally as shocked by the price and agreed that the OP definitely got โscammedโ in the process.
โYou got โtrappedโ in this.โ

โRidiculous pricing!โ

Another suggested a method for OP to follow if he were to encounter the same incident: โYou should immediately reject it and walk away. I did this before, where I simply said โSorryโ and walked off, leaving the boss stunned.โ
