M’sian Shares How Driving To Train Station, Commuting To Work Saves Her More Than RM300 Monthly

She used to drive to work and spent over RM500 on fuel, tolls and parking alone.
For many KL commuters, driving to work is just part of life. Sit in traffic, pay for petrol, fork out toll fees, hunt for parking, and repeat.

But a commuter recently shared that she decided to try something different and how it paid off.

In a Threads post, she said she used to drive all the way to her office in KL. By the end of each month, she was spending over RM500 on fuel, tolls and parking alone.

Now, her routine looks very different. After sending her child to school, she drives just five minutes to the nearest KTM station.

From there, she takes KTM and MRT to complete her journey to work. With this switch, her monthly commuting cost dropped to around RM170 — saving her more than RM300 each month.

She added that travel time is roughly the same as before.

Better mental health

The main difference is the stress level. Instead of focusing on bumper-to-bumper traffic, she now spends her commute relaxing on the train and scrolling through her phone.

She also said that continuously expanding highways and adding more lanes will only offer temporary relief. Improving and extending MRT coverage to more areas, especially satellite towns, would be a more long-term solution.

Several netizens shared that they too have cut down on driving to work and noticed significant savings on petrol, tolls and parking.

Others said switching to public transport even improved their daily mood and mental well-being.

While some pointed out that train frequency could still be improved, many agreed on one thing. For KL commuters, choosing MRT over driving is becoming less of a sacrifice and more of a smart lifestyle upgrade.
